We’re probably really rich, or rather, rich in stones? The sheer, unimaginable quantity of sandstone already present in the topsoil of this south-facing slope is a nightmare to work in this vineyard, yet it’s the source of the minerality and salinity of the Grüner Veltliner and Gemischter Satz wines that grow here. For a winemaker, there is nothing more beautiful than the subtle, site-specific differences in the taste of the wines.

The Steingasse vineyard, planted before 1950, is our oldest. The old wire trellis with its wooden posts is meticulously maintained and repaired by hand each year. The partially terraced rows of vines are a rarity in this wine region. A large, old dry stone wall encloses the terraces, providing a habitat for our favorite visitor – the emerald lizard – and adding a touch of diversity to the wine-growing landscape.
